front forks
hello to all, I am in the process of making several repairs to my '86 Aspy. the problem I am having at the moment is that I have stripped out the allen head bolt at the bottom of my left fork tube. If anyone has any tricks to getting it out (short of drilling and using an easy out) I would love to know how it could be done.

Hello Racejunky. I had to drill both of mine when I replaced the seals and dust covers. Nothing to it if you just drill the head off the allen bolt, remove the lower fork and the bolt will twist out with your fingers. Replace with a new metric allen head and you are good to go.

Although this isnt about drilling the heads of the lower allen head bolt, sometimes if the springs have been removed PRIOR to removing the bolt, the inside lower tube will turn thus preventing removal of the bolt. A simple method is to remove the anti dive mechanism an locate a hole which is present, insert a suitable tool then lock the inner tube to the fork slider and then remove the allen bolt.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Thanks Pappy that worked like a charm, and so did The advice that Tricky gave me. I wound up needing that when I went to tighten eveything down. I have been trying to get this posted for some time I even had Don contacct Vic to see if we could figure out why I couldn't get it to go. As it turns out it seems to have been my puter. So I'm gonna try this again.

Glad it worked for you racejunky. This forum is a great place for information on doing anything that comes up on our old babies. Somebody here has seen most everything that can come up.
