poorboy kit

.... a far cry from the dude on Ebay selling a kit similar to Don's for $300 and a complete kit, ready to be installed (less fairing stay modification) for $650, and $750 if you have fuel injection!
But hey, ebay shipping is FREE! It is a fair amount of work, but once in, you WILL be very happy. Thanks again Don for your idea, the kit and the advice. -Riding On (with a Geo Metro Alt.!)

Only has 52K. Should put it in a museum, but that will not happen. I have read much about the 84 stator woes and the poorboy fix. Could you please PM the address for the kit? From the pictures it looks like a GM alternator. Which one? Thanks much. |

Shayne2929,
If you go to the section just above this one titled " Important Threads" second entry it has instructions for installing my kit. It is a bit out dated but they are usable. Poorboy |

I have just bought an 85 gl1200i. Is mine prone to the same problems? Should I get the kit from Don and if so, could someone please send me the address? It has just over 28K for miles so I have lots of life yet. I have read a bit and I keep hearing about soldering the 3 wires. What wires are they and why? I have the bike torn down right now while I am sealing the gas tank. Any recommendations of things to do while its apart would be appreciated.

The three wires that need soldered go to the Stator ( alternator) that is the most common failure on the bike. By soldering those connections you help eliminate heated resistance in the connectors that raise amperage and makes the Stator fail. That part is located in the back off the engine so engine removal is the repair if not going the poorboy method. I've been lucky so far but many here have not

Is this one of the units that have this problem? |

Yes, all your doing is bypassing the connectors, these have been pointed to being a possible reason why the stators have been burning up however if your going to be doing the poorboy you don't need to concern yourself with the three yellow wires as you will not be using the on board regulator/rectifier.
It seems that the problem was occurring in all 84-87 gl1200's
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

So do you solder them together and then reconnect them to the stator? I'm confused! [quote='FatBob' pid='85762' dateline='1506630705'] What tricky meant was the wires are soldered individually to each stator wire. Do not "gang" all the wires together. |
