Tips on seperating exhaust
I'm in the process of pulling the engine, and hoping some of the experts have some tips on seperating the exhaust where the two bolt clamps are on each side. I can get the right side to slide back a little, but the left side will not budge.
Along with removing the exhaust for engine removal, I'm wanting to completely wash and wax the frame while it's all out.
I appreciate everyone's help.

If your removing the engine then removal of the COMPLETE exhaust is necessary, once removed you will find it easier to separate the muffler from the header pipes
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Removing the exhaust as a whole unit IS easier than removing it in pieces as Tricky mentioned, even if you are only replacing the gasket between the header and the muffler. If removing the system as a unit, I suggest placing the bike on its side stand (if you have to use one of the bikes stands while you are working.) The exhaust system will get caught up on the center stand (if deployed) once it is dropped.

If you do need to seperate the headers from the muffler assembly, be careful not to anchor the muffler and twist the header. I have seen the thin metal of the header-to-muffler tip get all twisted and deformed when this method is used.
Yes, the header was seperated from the muffler, but now it won't reassemble.

Good Luck!

Thanks a million. Yeah, I got things started with the bike up on the center stand, so I had messed up before I got going. I did get the engine out tonight, so now I need to talk my wife into helping me get the frame cleaned up.
Thanks for your help.

Some thing to keep in mind, When you reinstall the motor. Try to clean any spot that the motor would ground to the frame. Like motor mounts, spots like that. I lost ground because I paint my engine and clear coated it. I didn't make sure the mounts were clean..
