TIMING BELT BREAKS WHILE IN MOTION AT FULL POWER
Its a shame you couldn't restore the house, from what we could see in the video it looked like a Jem

Hey my wife is similar to yours except mine only notices that I am aging.

Good luck in the new digs !!

Thanks Angela et al, You're all sweeties and great friends.

We're REALLY O.K. I know you don't need to be reminded of what we once again learned up close ... that you don't even have to do a thing ... your life can be changed in an instant, [snapping finger] just like that ! We were thinking of those hundreds of thousands families several weeks ago who lost EVERYTHING in Hurricane Sandy and have nowhere to go.

As Vic pointed out, some of you'all had very big mishaps and losses from which recovery was either very slow or not at all. Against all of that, what we have now is an inconvenience rather than a tragedy. Maybe it's because we're older but the other day we looked at each other and agreed we really don't need anything more. Heart

So we decided to throw caution to the wind Big Grin and spend a weekend in Las Vegas on one of those reduced flight-hotel-car package deals. We've never been there (although our kids at one time or another have been). Y'a see, my wife's birthday is Feb 12, and we were married Feb 14 Heart (25 years ago). [Imagine how typically financially wiped out I am by Feb 15 ! Big Grin]. We don't gamble (other than plain old living) or drink booze (or smoke, etc.), but it's about going there to see the spectacle and take pictures. This seemed like as good a time as any to take THAT plunge [I've even met people from Australia and China who've been to Las Vegas ... but not US !].

Lucky you. I have never been out of the country except to run down across the line for gas or shopping & also for hauling "goods" to the lower 48. Only holidays I have ever had is weekend Camping. Had a family business trip to London, Eng for mt father after his mothers passing (he was too sick to go) so they sent me but that was one glorious week in Feb & I got to see pretty much nout except the rain & Fog(smog?).
I really do hope you & your sweetheart have a great time as it is good for your mental health to just get away from the dailly grind once a year. Cheers AngelaSmileHeartWink

In fact, the first time I lived outside the USA began by driving from New York City to Edmonton (U of A) in my ancient Ford Fairlane 'wagon hauling a homemade trailer fashioned from the back of a 1950 Hudson pickup truck. We must have looked pathetic (my wife + 1-1/2 year old son) because outside of Regina the axle broke on the trailer ... and we limped to a Husky TRUCK stop. I was really (financially) scared: where in Regina can you find a 1950 Hudson pickup truck axle, and how much would we get charged for installing it at a big fancy truck stop (in the middle of nowhere: 781 km (430 mi) from Edmonton ... actually even further 'cause Canada 16 had not yet been built in 1964)? A VERY kind and friendly Husky mechanic told us to go sight seeing and get something to eat during 4-5 hours. When we got back, the trailer was hitched up to the wagon, ready to go. Nearly shaking, I asked how much we owed them. $25 was the answer (I figured that was for the used axle without labour ... still a bargain by New York standards). "And what's the rest of it?" I asked. There was no rest of it. Then I asked, how did they ever find a used axle. Oh there were no Hudson axles in Regina. Their machinist fabricated one by copying the good one ! [I almost fainted] They wished us well, and God speed.

We arrived on a pouring rain Sunday night at the outskirts of Edmonton with our very last $25 American Express Traveler's Cheque, and parked overnight ($10) in a trailer park. The lady who operated the park (remember? we looked pathetic) said we could park our Ford wagon (which doubled as our bedroom on wheels) in her garage out of the rain ... and use her bathroom. Next day, after a $10 breakfast for three and $5 for gasoline, I paid my first visit to the U of A where there was a monthly paycheck waiting for me sent by my previous employer. Racing to the nearest bank, I asked the manager how long I would have to wait for cashing this check (drawn on a New York bank). Smiling, he said as long as it takes me to endorse it. And that is how it went for us during three and a half years in Edmonton. Obviously, we had died and gone to heaven. Smile

That's not surprising Fred for that part of this country, (especially back then). Things would not be as cheap today but the ppl would be just as nice. Most all westerners & particularly the prairie folk are super friendly. Cheers Angela
