there is no auto shutoff for overheat but the pg's may have malfunctioned from overheating and shut the ignition down, once it cools off see what happens and report back

any idea why the bike overheated, fan not working? low on anti-freeze?

any work you have done recently?

Have you looked at BOTH of the main fuses? Power going through the fuse box, verified with a test light?

Cooling system has only a few parts: coolant, radiator, thermostat, hoses, radiator cap, overflow tank, water pump, fan, thermal switch, fan fuse.
Once you figure out the lack of power, check each cooling system component.

Coolant level
Radiator flowing, no leaks
Thermostat opening and closing, inserted properly and rotated properly; replacement parts: (180 degree) NAPA – 535080; Stand – 45868; Autozone - 15868
Hoses not leaking or collapsed (soft); replacement parts: NAPA – 7733; Gates – 21008; CarQuest – 21029 (made by Gates)
Radiator cap sealing properly; replacement parts: NAPA – 703-1443; Stant - 10227
Overflow tank sealed with no air leaks
Water pump rotating as it should
Fan spinning freely
Fan fuse is not blown
Thermal switch is not defective
replacement parts: (this is in my notes, although I haven’t tried it, and was found at this forum)
The automotive equivalent for the Interstate sensor is: 37750-611-154.
* Keep in mind that this is for the Interstate single pin sensor *

"Here is a new part number for the temp sensor. The automotive equivalent for the Interstate sensor is: 37750-611-154. Honda numbers with a MG9 are coded for 1200 Goldwings, numbers with 611 are automotive listing of the same part. So if you are having difficulty finding a part, try changing out the MG9 with 611.

I picked up a sensor from NAPA for $28." The Honda lists at $38 at Ronayers.

Keep in mind that this is for the Interstate single pin sensor"

Hope this helps.

OK here is the finial word. The bike shut down do to over heating. In the a temp to restart i burned up the 30 amp fuse on the selanoide. Replaced the fuse the bike had cooled for 3 hours it started and I drove it home. The bike has aways run hot ( i've owned it for two years) at the end of the white on the gauge. I have replaced the thurmasat and new coolant no big improvement. Fan is fine turns on and off manually so I know it's on. I do not know what else to try any suggestions?
I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to try to help. Thanks Bill

Is the radiator clean and clear? Is the fan blowing in the correct direction, toward the engine? Are the head gaskets leaking and blowing air into the cooling system? Is the water pump actually pumping properly? Are any coolant hoses kinked and blocking flow? Have you tried a superior waterless coolant such as Evans coolant? Are the brakes dragging on the bike causing the engine to work excessively hard? all these things must be inspected.

Mine didn't overheat at 2x the speed limit. In Texas in July. Until this year when my water pump started going, now it overheats at anything above 65 MPH if it's hot out.

Water pump replacement scheduled soon.

I will say this. I've noticed it slowly running hotter over the last 2 years, as I assume the water pump slowly got worse. Just in the last 6-8 months it's gotten bad enough to overheat during normal riding conditions and I noticed oil in the water and oil coming from the weep hole. If you've had the bike less than 2 years and it's always run hotter than you would expect, I would certainly suspect the water pump based on my purely anecdotal evidence.

And you don't want to delay fixing a leaking water pump because anti freeze in the oil can very quickly wipe out crankshaft bearings resulting in a very soon to be dead engine.

Vic is absolutely right. I'm riding out of necessity, but I check my oil DAILY to make sure I'm not getting water in the oil, and I only ride about 20 miles a day (commuting to work). What I'm doing is a calculated risk, but I've been a mechanic (either professionally or shade tree) for 30 years, so at least I know the risk I'm taking and doing what I can to mitigate that risk.

I am in the same boat as you garyft. I ride 64 miles daily, out of necessity.
I too check fluids, daily the bike is put on a tender, every other day I check oil, water once a week.

Thanks for the feed back. Is over heating the only sign of a bad water pump?
