Interstate speedometer cable replacement

I've searched the forum but haven't been able to locate anything about replacing the speedometer cable. My speedometer cable gave up the ghost with a little over 93k miles and I've ordered a new one and I am trying to figure out the easiest way to get it loose from the back of the speedometer. Do I have to pull the instrument cluster or could I remove the headlight and reach it from the front of the fairing. Any help would be welcome.

I'm pretty sure you have to pull the gauge cluster. I'll look after while to be sure.

You don't have to remove the cluster just take the bolts out and tilt it forward and you can get to the cable nut to remove it with pliers. Just did mine last year and it was more trouble getting to it than actually replacing it!

omg i just did mine by trail and error the book made it seam to simple , oh but it wasn't .. wound up taking headlight out windshield off and losing the instrument cluster the removing with pliers as mentioned above, but it's a learning thing.. will no the easy way next time.

does the cable just wear out and brake or is the wheel unit at falt?? i turned the wheel and the knife edge turns ok ????

Like any moving part, lubrication is the key to longevity.
I recall the older bikes required periodic lubricating.
Just know, too much lubricante will leak out the lowest point of any cable.
Todays cables and/or cable casings may be impregnated with a lubricante which, overtime, will loose their lubricating capabilities and require some preventative maintenance.

I have over 140,000 on my bike with no knowledge of it having been replaced.
I am the second owner.
