Warms up then won't run
I've been having a problem with my cooling system recently. My GW is a GL1200 LTD with 65000 miles showing. I've had it for over 3 years and until recently it has ran great. The other day I noticed a big plum of white steam come from the exhaust. I assumed it was from my having just sprayed it down. I did ride approx 1 mile to the gas station. After filling up, I got the steam. Engine ran great no problems.

Now I'm running very hot, have little coolant in the radiator. I have indication of a leak, I do not blow steam when riding. I just took out the spark plugs. Left side covered in soot, cleaned put back in. Right side, looked clean, no soot.

Prior to removing spark plug ran engine up to temp with no radiator cap couldn't seem to get radiator to fill up, had a leak on the left side of the radator from the top. Let it cool down, did the above to the spark plugs and filled radiator.

Started engine, idle was all over the place, 800, 2200 when temp guage hit 4 bars, stalled, wouldn't restart.

Will try again when cool, any other hints, tips, sugestions would be appreicated.

Sorry to hear about your problem but...
Same thing happened to me last night, I could see the steam probably due to the cooler temps also engine went hot quick and lost coolant. I am guessing you are blowing steam but cant see it due to the temperature, but only guessing. fill the radiator leave the cap off and start it up, mine gurgled back through the radiator and leaked into the #3 cylinder. I verified the #3 leak by pulling the plugs, turning the wing over and watching water shoot out.

Sure hope yours is some thing else though

Good luck

Agreed. Head gasket. I'm suffering from the same problem and already have the top end gasket set plus valve seals. I'll be doing mine very soon, but will first try something Vic mentioned. Verifying and even over torquing the heads 5% or so has apparently helped others in the past.

I don't believe mine is quite as bad as yours as it runs fine anywhere I want to go. But it's "steamy", too. That doesn't happen in Phoenix unless you're bleeding fluid into a cylinder.
