I have a 1985 LTD, wil run approximately 4 minutes and quits
she will start up and run approximately 4 minutes and quit..after several hours she will start up and run again about 4 minutes. It is almost like something in the electronic system is heating up and possibly opening a circuit that should be closed...Has anyone had this problem?? I sure could use some guidance here!! ....Thanks

have you been able to check the charging circuit to see if that is operating correctly, also have the dogbones been checked and/or replaced?

when it quits do you have lights and dashboard etc?

Pulse generators gone bad?

I see that you are new. WELCOME !

As Neo has said, confirm that charging system is ok. Also check the battery and be certain it's good. EFI's need a good fresh battery to run properly. Also have a good look at ALL of the power and ground points for good clean, and tight connections. Do these things first.

If all that checks out ok, then, right after it quits, pull a plug(s) and check for spark. Also see if they are fouled in any way. If the ignition is ok, then you'll need to check the fuel pressure to see if the fuel pump and pressure regulator are good.

Hopefully, you'll stumble across something easy to fix. But these things will get you started in the right direction. Good luck and keep us posted of what you find.

Welcome to the site!
If you have a good memory, disregard this. But if you are like me, I have a bad memory, you may want to write down what you have tried.
Call it a diary, call it a log book, call it what you want.
My bike sat unused for two years - she was looking for some attention. (what 'she' isn't? - INCOMING!!!!! lol)
Without the log book, I would be chasing my tail, possibly repeating something I had already tried.
Plus - once the bike is running as she should, if there is a problem, checking the log book may tell you what the repair is.

When she quits all spark at the plugs is gone, fuel pressure is there. Dash lights are there and she will crank till the battery is dead. My opinion would be the pickup / pulse coils. Funny thing is, I have never seen any pickup coils go bad the way these are going.. Maybe I should find the correct ohms reading and check them after she shuts down??????????

Yes.... Check right after it shuts down. Also check to see if the ignition coils are getting power.

You could heat the pulse coils with heat gun or hair dryer , while it running in shop. Hard and dangerous to work on bike on road side.

first thing i'd change out would be replace both 30amp dogbones with 30amp ATO fuseholders

If the charge level drops below 9.5 volts then the ignition will cease to fire. Also if the pulse generators are bad they may be failing to send any signal tot he coils when they warm up.

im gonna just go with my gut here and say its the coils themselves breaking down killing your fire.

I have an 85 Aspencade, a couple years ago I bought a new bike because my Wing died. I looked at everything, I looked on here and followed a bunch of ideas except the easiest one, check the battery, it was less than 1 year old so I "knew" it was good. After I bought the new bike I finally gave in and had the battery load tested and it was bad. I put in a new one and she started right up. Boy was my wife happy I bought another bike, LOL. Anyway I thought it was all fixed but once the bike warmed up it would restart maybe 1 time when I rode it. It ended up also needing a new Positive Cable for the battery. I replaced this after learning on here that when wire gets warm the resistance goes up.
Good luck I know it can be very frustrating, maybe you should buy a new bike to ride until you figure this out then you'll have 2 Smile
