Can I pull the fork slider off only to replace seal?

Ok guys, got it. Very well explained. I already printed out the pages. They tell a lot. But nothing is more educational than hands on, which will be this weekend. Of course now my rear shock leaking. Omg. Next.

It is in the slider, but it will not go over the bottom of fork tube. Poorboy

I changed mine last year and had no problem doing so with the top tubes in place. No need to remove anything from the triple tree. Easy enough job only took about 2 hours.

I have actually seen videos of guys who can change the tires on their cars while they are rolling down the highway at 50 MPH and they make it look easy, so, anything is possible. :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: For me, loosening 2 bolts on the triple clamps and removing a circlip allows me to carefully inspect the fork tubes for damage such as nicks, rust or bends. Those triple tree clamp bolts are not hard to get at plus it gives me a chance to make sure everything is right before I reassemble everything.

I've been reading this thread and have a couple of questions. How do I remove the fork brace? And, what size is the socket bolt in the bottom of the forks? A 6mm wants to slip in the bolt, a 7mm and 1/4" won't fit.

The fork brace are removed by the 4 bolts on the top of it. Not sure as to the size of the bottom bolt. For me, I had the same problem and ended up stripping mine last year and had to drill the head off and replaced with another allen bolt. Not as hard as it sounds.....

Just done mine,if you take the forks out you can inspect them and clean them if grit has got in, and how do you know if you do one fork that the the oil levels are equal as a previous owner may have filled them both equal but not to the specified amount,so you fill just one fork to spec and then you have different amounts in each fork leg.

The link shows a plastic hose with a worm drive clip on over the inner fork passed through a hole in a piece of wood and G Clamped to a folding work bench ,i used a cordless drill with a socket to push the spring down and then spin the cap in the fork.

I changed my rear tire last year while I rolled down the Interstate eating an egg mcmuffin. The only hard part was balancing my coffee on the faux tank while I wiped my chin......

I had seals which were leaking and I saw this tool which is a thin, pliable sheet which slips between the fork tube and the seal.
It claimed to be able to postpone seal replacement if it is only trapped dirt causing the leak and not a faulty seal.
I tried the idea with a piece of scrap mylar from our silkscreening department, making two passes on each fork and I was able to remove so much dirt, the seals are no longer leaking.
I have been leak free for over 15,000 miles.
