Air drier in the air pump

Just finished this job - whew! It'll be way easier next time.

I read through all the instructions and hints. Here's what worked for me.

If you just drag the compressor/drier assembly out once the controls are removed, you'll break the two little rubber nipples that hold it in place for sure. The rear one is easy to access and push through the hole. The front one APPEARS impossible.

Did NOT help me to remove the headlight for access ('85 Aspy). No access through the radio. Looked too hard to remove the instrument panel surround too. But I did find out that the windshield is adjustable about 1.5" up - and raised it that much.

What I did was remove the right speaker (remove the HONDA emblem from the grille and the screw behind it), then the rubber air duct for the air vent, then the air vent grille.

That way you have access through the speaker hole to the front nipple on the compressor side.

If you reach up under the fairing, you can access the front nipple just under the edge of the instrument panel surround down in the hole the forks go through. The surround is fairly flexible and you can at least get a couple fingers on the front bit.

I went to the local grocery store and they gave me a handful of desiccant packets that candies are packed with. It looked identical to the Honda desiccant (just not all pink with moisture).

Once it's all back together it's pretty easy to get the retainers started and pull then through with fingers and needle nose pliers. Good afternoon of work but if I ever have to do this again it will be much easier.

Now it's time to go change fork oil before I repressurize with nice dry air....

On this thread- I just acquired a pump system for my 84 I. Is there a schematic of where all the stuff is supposed to mount? Have a shop manual and it just is not in there anywhere. Yep- Honda shop book, not one of the after market ones.

It mounts in the RIGHT side fairing cubby. On the Aspy there are two holes that the little rubber stoppers plug into. If you didn't have air suspension you might have to drill those holes yourself?

The right side also should have Air Hose exit holes on the bottom side of that fairing. and in the center of those exit holes is the mounting point for the pressure sensor.

FYI; I found the desecant stuff at Princess Auto, it comes in a small sealed plastic bottle..it was only $4.00. :YMAPPLAUSE:
I got 3 of them,but, I think one is pretty close to the amount I took out of mine.
I did the microwave thing,but, even after only a few minuets it went pink again just sitting out. :roll: I guess I didn't do it enough times to really dry it....I know one thing for sure..DON'T try to pick it up right out of the micro..friggin' HOT! hock: hock: And it sticks to your fingers!!...LOL :-\

You'll know when microwaving or heating it on a cookie pan in the oven is complete; Dessicant (sp) turns from pink to bright blue.

As far as break-down? I don't know about that. When you re-load, just don't put the powdery stuff back in. It will always work after it's dried out as long as the volume you put back in is sufficient.

Bullwinkle3 and sidecar2 here. They have an 86 Aspencade with the sidecar. I have only had the rig for a month and the suspension has been fine. But the compressor does not work at all. Any 83 interstate that I had previously you had to put the air in manually. Has anybody figured out a way to go back to the old manual system. I got along just fine back then. And in my case I'd have to take the sidecar off to access the right fairing pockets. Any suggestions?

Ok everyone says there is no stupid questions, so here goes. I just found the air compressor on my 86 Aspencade do to my cousin is trying to install one on his 84 Interstate asked me to send pics so he could see how it is situated in the fairing. I did not know where to look for it nor up to this point I did not think I had a need to. But now that I did find it, there seems to be what looks like a site glass as you look into the fairing. Is that what I am seeing? If so what should I see in the glass, if anything?

Good web site; excellant info!! I was wondering if any body has tried to change the dessicant system to a water filter/separator, as used on a paint gun. I seem to remember some body mentioned it some where, but can't remember where. I thought that insted of sevicing the desicant that you could just drain any moisture from the filter!

For those looking for rem/install instructions with break down pictures, it is done well in the clymer service/repair / maintenance manual Pg. 221-224 I also got my desicant from our local honda dealer 3 yr. ago.. but lists discontinued now.

i put mine in the oven on 250 for 15 min on tin foil shiny side up. works great. theres a great post about it on goldwing docs website.

Hi Guys, maybe someone can help me with this issue.
first of all thank you for the information Tricky on servicing the desicant, did tat yesterday and really wasn't that hard to get the compressor back in, (just had to be patient)
I have the EEE reading on on my display, can some one give me some help as to what to look for.

Good evening to all; good site, have gotten lots of excellent info here.
Question on air drier: Has any one tried to replace the stock drier with a water separator/filter, used on air tools, to keep moisture out of such? I read some where, that some one had, and can't seem to remember or find where it is/was.
If I could find it I would contact him/her to see how it worked out.
It seems to me that, draining one of these would be better than servicing the desiccant every year or two.
What do you guys think??
