The shop that changed my tire last week had an old, fully manual bike tire machine. They probably do hundreds of tires a year....I figure if it works for them..........

Am I wrong, or can tough beads be broken with a large C clamp?

They sure can. Just use a couple pieces of hardwood or a couple pieces of wide flat metal so you spread the load out and protect the tire.
