I can't say what wider tire may fit rear - I've had rear off 3 times and I'm not sure you would get a bigger tire installed without dismantling final drive?

Bang for buck comment: I installed a Dunlop E something two years ago on the rear (OE tire/size for 85 Aspy) with an existing Metzler M880 on the front - The Dunlop lasted about 7,000 - 8,000 miles 50% of them fully loaded 2 up. I installed Metzler M880 front and rear in standard sizes a year ago (we don't ride much if ever between November and mid March due to "climate change" (winter) :d). The tires have about 6,000 miles and the rear has 75% left. The Metzler rear cost more than the Dunlop, but appears it is going to be quite a bit better value for money. There was a noticible improvement in the handling of the bike but we ride briskly in the twisties. Matching front and rear tires is likely half the reason for handling improvement. The M880's produce a noise when leaned over. They do not follow parallel cracks or weave around on metal bridge decks. They handle very well in rain. They have a cool elephant trade mark on them.

I just replaced the rear with Elite 3 and had the final drive out, I can't imagine trying to get a wider/larger tire installed back there.

Hi Jim, long time no see!
I put a set on Shinkos on last year and quite like them. $69.99 for the stock size rear.

These guys were good to deal with. Shipped fast and tires were fresh.
Here is a string we've been chatting about them: <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://gl1200goldwings.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=6987">viewtopic.php?f=54&t=6987</a><!-- l -->
