Correct Idle RPMs

All,
For my 87 1200cc, what would be the ideal idle rpm? :-\ I've read 1000rpms is good but figured I'd ask before assuming. |

The book states my '84 should be 1,000 rpm, +/- 100.

If your bike has a lot of lights keep the idle on the higher side to keep the battery charging around town.

Call me a maverick, but I keep my idle around 1,000 rpm. Plus or minus 100, of course. #-O

OK...I've tried everywhere between 900 and 1200 rpms now...engine clunks a lot more under 1000 so 1100 it is for me!

I'm idling around 1100 to 1200 to keep the external alternator charging when sitting.

I used to keep it at 960 warmed up, but with the self exciting 60 amp racing alternator conversion I now keep it at 1050-1140 and she keeps charging at idle.
Book said 900-1100 (warm) is correct.

After syncing the carbs, rather while syncing the carbs, it seemed to prefer 960 once its hot.
Its probably my imagination, but 960 idle seems to give me much much less of the smoky startups. When I got it, it wouldn't idle less than 1100. It would also smoke out every 5-6th start up. Rare now (and yes, increased frequent oil changes, filter changes and other things done could have reduced it as well) |
