air filter

Hey guys
Does anybody have a cross reference or part numbers for air filters for the 1200? I've been sitting here searching for nearly an hour, and darn if I can find anything but the KN filter. The K & N seems pretty pricey, nearly $50...is it worth the extra $$ Thanks John

I remember reading somewhere on this site about some cross references for air filters but I can't remember where. I go to the dealer, they sell reg Honda filters and aftermarket for about 1/2 the price. I go with the aftermarket ones, they work just fine. I don't have the number but I can get it with a phone call if you want it.

The last time I bought filters, I bought them at http://www.cyclemaxohio.com. I bought a package that included an air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, and 4 spark plugs for $25.00. Sounded like a decent deal to me.
They Still list it, here is the site info. http://www.cyclemaxohio.com/maintenance?start=100 Bob

I just noticed that cyclemax is selling the same kits on ebay, so if you're willing to bid and hit or miss you might be able to pick it up a little cheaper.

85GL1200I Wrote:Hey guys Hi John, K&N and other filters of this type (washable / oiled element) can flow better than dry cartridge filters. They also offer the economy of not needing to be replaced if you are in severe service (lots of filter clogging). You only buy one filter, and service it as needed. I bought a K&N filter for our GL1200A this spring. I have used K&N filters in various other applications for years. I was suprised to find the filter did not have the hole for the crankcase breather connection in the top cover. It was quite a job to drill one. I emailed pics to K&N customer service and received no response on this issue. I also bought a K&N for my 2008 KLR650 dual sport at the same time which does not fit. Pics and questions to customer service - K&N customer service assures me it is correct etc but it is in two parts, element and top cover, and Harry Houdini could maybe get enough hands and fingers in the air box to hold it all together and force the top on but I can't. The stock Honda element I installed new last season which had about 7500 miles when I removed it looked like new when viewed with a light. On our just completed 1400 miles of mountain riding the Wing performed well, including riding over passes 5600 to 7200 ft - 2 up with some baggage - there is more intake noise ( it's a nice noise on a Wing) which suggests more air flow. If you choose to go with a K&N - open the box at the store, and take a peek. There needs to be a 3/4 in approx hole in the top metal cover to accept the grommet and pipe for the breather. If there isn't, hand it back to them. You can waste a half a good riding morning and much cussin' on having to drill the cover, if you have the tools. |

85GL1200I Wrote:Hey guys HA ha John - not quite thru my 1st Sunday a.m. coffee - after my long winded post here's maybe the info you asked for: http://www.knfilters.com/search/appsearch.aspx - shows p/n HA8084 & the p/n I was given was HA8084 - that is for 1985 GL1200A - using the K&N search function - this is the same p/n for GL1200I but not the Limited - it shows p/n HA8085. The picture shows the hole in the top which is how it should be. I may have got a mfg defect model. |

I just bought a new EMGO, part number 12-90021, from my local shop for $12. Has the extra hole you need to install the included plug.

I tried the K&N filter and found it not only made more noise in the cockpit but also made the intake very dirty. After a couple of years I went back to the regular paper filters and the intake has remained clean and the bike a lot quieter too.
I could see having a washable filter being a plus on a dirt bike, but for the road bike it is not needed, also the paper filter works just as well, and the fuel mileage remains the same. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Brand-New...4aaf2e04eb http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-Gol...336bf63260
