Quick Question
1984 GL12000 Won't start, No fire or very week. Question is would the Regulator Rectifier cause this or is it just for keeping a charge in the battery? Coils seem to test ok.......Thanks

low battery voltage compounds the problem, attach another battery tio it and see if conditions improve,if so find the problems with the charging circuit, might even check your pulse generators....could be alot of problems, first is battery voltage, running and non-running and diagnose from there, give us some more info to work with

Not likely anything to do with the charging or battery... I have put in a battery that was so dead it wouldn't even make the solenoid click... With a good pushing it started right up and ran fine off the stators output... The 1500's won't do this as they require at least 9.3 volts to even run once started...
First thing to check is the easy stuff...

Insure the kill switch is in the run position (I have seen this be the cause many a time)...

Insure the dog bone fuse (one in the solenoid area) is good...

Spray the ignition key slot with penetrating oil and work the key through all positions several times...

Is the battery charged enough to turn the engine over at near normal speed.???

Check the plug wires to insure they are screwed in tight to the plug boots and coils...

Verify the coils have a good ground (ohm the neg side of coil to the neg bat terminal)...

Verify battery voltage is getting to the coils (will be pulsed while cranking engine)...

If none of the above helps out then it likely is time to down load a trouble shooting manual and get ready for some serious testing...

The Regulator Rectifier would not cause the no start situation unless the battery had been run down the last time the bike ran. Check the cranking voltage and let us know what it is.

Remove the spark plug cap from the plug wire and then check for spark. Sometimes a bad resistor in the plug cap will cause a weak spark.

Bad pulse generators can also cause a weak intermittent spark. Check the pulse generators using the method in the manual.
