I posted this at another site but need all the help I can Get,....Was working on bike(gl1100) converting my single barrel Holley to a 32/36 Weber/Holley, when I just cranked her over once and sounded like a 50 caliber I tried a couple times after that and she did the same, backfired thru the carb alittle , stopped then I hit the start button and BOOM right thru the muffler!!! (next door neighbor came over to see if I had a gun permit ) I needed to change some of the jets so I put on my old CI set up and now she is doing the same ( backfiring thru carb and muffler,..... WHAT GIVES!!) Changed Plugs and still the same backfiring so I checked for spark and all where a nice blue spark !! Did a compression check ( The equipment is not the best) Left 170/165, right side 75/80 ( throttle plate was wide open )!! I still have to drain the oil and see if any antifreeze contaminated it and drain the antifreeze to inspect its' condition!! I was going to change the T-belts before this happened and I still have to take a look to see if I jumped a tooth !!! I also forget to mention when I started ( after it backfired a couple times ) I realized the gas gauage showed empty, tried again with a full tank still the same,... BOOM !! I tried to tell everything I've done up to now, so if anyone has some ideas, suggestions, or a bank loan it would be most appreciated Thanks or HELP 8) Bob I'll keep you updated!!

With compression on the left side and next to none on the right,,,,, I'd check the timing belt's cuz it sound's like the right one has jumped and possibly bent a valve..

Never, ever use sealant on head gaskets unless the manufacturer of the head gaskets specifies a sealant to be used.

Thanks Vic, that's what I thought also!! Still on hold but have gotten all the stuff to repair bike!! Probably should start a new thread on this one and not trying to take away from Randakk pump conversion, but would you happen to know and or anybody else know, where he tied into for a power source!!! Thanks Bob

I would imagine that he would use the existing power source as it is timed with the ignition pulses.

I recently posted about my bike running bad and this is what I have done so far. Drained oil and antifreeze, both showed no contaminates of a blown head gasket. I recently done a compression test, left side (172-165) right side ( 90-80 ) both are not exact but the right was very low. I checked the timing belts, T1 up and the right mark was about 4 teeth from lining up beforehand and the left was right on. My delima is what to do next and also if it is determined to be bent valves should I just fix the offending side or put a new head gasket on left side too? Thanks Bob

Move the right hand mark up and then do a compression test again. Everything might be OK now.

Update,....In the process of putting the belts on I found the tensioners had signs of leaking grease  . So I'm using an idea of rebuilding them from our friendly Naked Goldwing site. In there Shop Talk area, there's a gentleman who posted "How to rebuild tensioners" by sandiegobrass.I found this to be most usefull and a very in expensive repair!! Also on another note about the electric fuel pump, I found the electrial connection to be tied into the rear brake light switch hot wire, the hot wire going into the switch! That's where I'll be tying in when I get every thing else fixed  . I 'll also have an inline anti siphoning valve when the bike is off and incorporate a toggle switch on the ground side to disable it if I ever need to turn the motor over for servicing. I'll try to take some pictures when I do the tensioner rebuild, cost was $18.60x2 + shipping=$43 , all other material I had

Update after changing timing belts, I did a compression test on the right side where the compression was 90/80 before and now the reading is 135/135. I still have to set the valve clearences. Also the compression tester I was using was a hand held and every time I tried using it the pressure seemed to push the adaptor out of place, I'm going to purchase a screw in adaptor and try for a better reading!! Now with the improvement in the readings now, does any body think I still have bent valves or is this safe to say I don't??? Any comment will be of use Thanks 8) Bob

Not likely the vavles are bent with 135 on both cylinders... What have you got to loose by giving it a try.??
