Well, I'm sure learning a lot of new tricks for an old dog  . I phoned a dealer in town to order some parts and I ended up talking to a mechanic. That was a surprise. He knew exactly what my problem was and explained it to me on the phone, then told me I could come down and take a look because he had a 1200 on the bench about to be torn apart for a stator job. I hightailed it down there and he showed me exactly what I need to do.
He pulled the slave cylinder cover, telling me this could be done without draining the clutch fluid. Hang that baby over to the side, stick my finger inside the clutch cover, pull out the oil seal put the new one in and close it up. On a bench it wouldn't take 5 minutes. He said it can be done on the bike in 30 minutes if you can get the bike in the air with a lift and the bolts come out without too much difficulty. Then he asked how much it was leaking. I told him not at all as long as the bike is sitting level. I haven't ridden it enough to know if it leaks while or after driving. He said if it wasn't normally leaking I could just drive it. If the hydraulic seal is holding there will be no migration of fluid into the motor oil and the motor oil doesn't mix with the hydraulic fluid either. It just drips down to the bottom of the slave body and drips out. When you see it all apart it makes so much sense. And to think I spent a night dreaming I was taking my engine out, tearing it apart and rebuilding, only to be left with an extra piston and fluid pouring straight to the floor :-ss . Not a very restful sleep. I'll probably go ahead and change when the part comes in next week but at least I have a great deal more peace of mind. Thanks to all of you for indulging me as I fretted my way through this. Your help and suggestions are greatly appreciated :-bd .
