LED Trunk Brake light

Did a search thru the entire electrical section, and could not find something similar.
Has anyone seen a brake or tail light/brake LED section to replace the INTERSTATE reflector located in the rear of the trunk? I am referring to the reflector bar that is about 2" tall and maybe 20" wide. I'm unsure of the exact dimensions as I am travelling right now for work. Seems it would have been a popular item, but I cannot find anything commercially. It would really add to the safety to keep from getting run over by cagers, not draw an awful lot of power, and be discreet when just riding down the road. |

why not just buy the aspencade trunk light and put the interstate logo on it?
you can put LEDs in those too. |

Mine is an 86 and it has a lighted "Interstate" trunk bar across the back. I'm thinking of removing the logo due to the fact that is essentially black.

Check out this site:
http://www.superbrightleds.com/1157.htm They seem to have a large selection at fair prices. They also carry solid-state blinkers and have a lot of technical information. I am looking at replacing all of my lights (less headlight) with LEDs. However, I have an 85 Aspencade and it has the brake light sensor on it. LEDs will show up as a burned out tail light because the sensor passes a very small current to the ground via the normal light element. When it does not sense the ground circuit, then it assumes that the filament has been lost and turns on the brake warning light. Also note that if you replace the turn signals, you have to use a solid-state blinker to replace the original electromagnetic/thermal one. Or you can add additional resisters to the turn signal circuit to increase the electrical load on the blinker relay. But this defeats the purpose of going to LEDs. If you have an aftermarket cruise control installed, it to must see a ground via the brake light filament. Therefore, you may need to keep a couple of the lights "old style" to keep the monitoring systems working properly. When I get the conversion completed I would like to submit an article about it. Keep them rolling! |

I have a 50 LED light bar mounted to the rack, between the helmet hangers, underneath the top box, and hooked up to the upper brake light circuit. It is invisible when you are standing behind the bike, but back off 15', or get into the drivers seat of a car behind you, and then it becomes very bright and noticeable when the brakes are activated.

I saw that an 84 had a stock light bar that came on as a Brake light. Not able to find one myself I went to the local Canadian tire and found some very bright LED light strips that were 16 inches long. I applied them to the back side of the plastic light lense. On the back side of the trunk I applied aluminium reflective tape . The lights are soft and OK as tail ights but not bright enough for brake lights. To fix that I bought an oval 12 bulb LEDlight that once again has tail and brake light applications (three wire, one ground one tail and one brake light wire)
I cut in the rubber weather seal then pushed the light into place and ran wires to the wirring harness. Had many vehicles pull up and compliment on the brake lights catching they're attention earlier. Send me an e mail address and I will send you photo's to show you how it works. Bob C |
