Got to Replace the Stator, What else should I check?

Hi Everyone,
Well it happened, and now I have to remove the engine to replace the stator. I would like to keep the bike original as to the motor/electrical system so I have to do this. However I am considering replacing most light bulbs with LEDs to reduce the electrical load. Before the stator failed, I was seeing a constant 14.7 volts on the digital voltmeter that came with the bike. Is this too high? Anyway, once I get the engine out of the frame what else should I check? My bike has 46K miles on it. There is a slight ticking noise when the bike is cold which I assume is a tappet issue. It's on the left side of the engine. After the bike warms up the noise is gone. I don't mine checking out the other components if you guys think it should be done. Thanks in advance. |

I don't believe I've welcomed you to the site so,,,, Welcome!!!
Besides a general clean up and repainting, I would suggest new vaccumn lines. Both Keener and Walter just replaced their stator's and regulator's so they'll probably have some suggestions for you and will be along soon!

Welcome to the site.
Did you check the state of the plug on the 3 yellow wires on the left side of the battery, hardwire them if they are not already done. I would also check the state of the wiring at the regulator for burned connections. These things can cause charging problems and they are easy to repair.
Ride safe have fun and enjoy. Lane

One other item both Walter and I re-furbished was the starter. Other than that and the items mentioned already, just give it a good goin' over.

Hi Owaace. Most stuff has been covered. I changed all my fuel and vacuum lines and rebuilt the starter. I also changed the Radiator hoses. Just got it all together last night. It cranks real nice! Still have to bleed the clutch though.
Oh, Welcome from BC! |

Thanks for the suggestions.
I did not read about the clutch so I will leave that alone. Most other items were done when I put the bike together the first time. I have pulled the rear wheel and final drive from the bike so the swing arm is still in place with the universale joint there too. I will lube this joint when the motor is out of the frame. Any hints or tips as to putting the u-joint back in place when I reinstall the final drive? Hope to be running in a couple of weeks! |
