It was a surprise to see how easy the engine came out with a rolling floor jack and a little help. Going back in the frame took about 2 hrs. It's amazing how easy that engine comes out but things didn't want to line up going back in :-W . Holding the universal shaft, spinning the tire, sliding the engine back and to the right at the same time made me wish I had a jack with 4 swivel wheels instead of just the rear wheels.... B-( Looking at the space between the frame and pulse generator, I'm praying that I don't ever have to change that! The UP side is that the Whiz, Bang, Clunk is GONE! Starts first time every time.. All that is left now on this 6 month project is the body work and paint.

Vic or someone, I think I might be having this issue with my GW. God help me!
![]() Does anyone have the pictures from the first post still? They come up with "?" marks. :?: As for symptoms. I have the whizz once in a while but no bang or clunk. I was originally thinking my starter was having issues and becoming stuck "engaged" and being spun by the motor as it starts!? I bought a repair kit for the start and was going to try to take it apart this weekend BUT doing more searching eventually lead me to this hidden thread... Well, raising this thread from the long slumber looking for some assistance. If anyone has the old pictures from Vic's original post that would be a big help to have me understand the issue more as well as if someone has an opinion on the issue I'm having I could use some assistance in diagnosing. B-( For the record I have a GL1200 1986 with 30K on it now. I rebuilt this from a NON-Running state but did not go deep into the engine. Clutch--yes, stator--yes, but never deep enough into the starter clutch. THANKS! |

Not to rain on anyoneâs parade, but donât rule out a weak battery. When I brought my Wing home, she needed a lot of work. After getting her running (using 20/50 dino at the time) we were hit with some cold weather (mid 40âs at night â yea, yea I know, thatâs not cold â got it!) and I was not able to get to the bike for about a week. When I returned, whiz, bang, clunkâ¦.. son-of-a-southerncalifornia- beach! I just got her running, now what??? First I thought starter problems, then I thought too thick of an oil, then the starter clutch. I like to try the easy stuff first and decided to test the specific gravity (state of charge) of the battery. COWABUNGA MOON DOGGIE! The battery was too weak to spin the starter fast enough to engage the clutch (whiz) and as the starter motor slowed down (bang), the starter clutch retracted with a clunk (clunk). Putting the battery on the battery tender for the night and the next day while at work, when I got home, she started right up! I changed to 5/40W synthetic (oil preference discussion not appropriate at this time) and she hasnât given a lick of trouble since. So, donât rule out a weak battery. Far easier (less expensive) than replacing the starter clutch.

I have also occassionally heard the noises coming from the case when the starter doesn't engage.
I am currently putting in a new "Rick's Stator" in my alternator. So I decided to also take care of the starter noise issue. Imagine my surprise when I disassembled the clutch engagement assembly and found absolutely nothing wrong with it. All the rollers, pins, springs and engagement hub are in perfect condition. I checked all components, measured everything, and all is in OEM condition. My point...... the "lack of engagement" noises do not always indicate that a problem is present. If the slipping is constant, an issue is probably developing. If slipping is far and in-between, there is probably nothing wrong at all.

Thanks all for your input!!
I did the Seafoam as well as I rebuilt the Starter. I should of done these at different times so I would of known for sure which problem I had. UGH! Live and Learn... However, My Whizzzz (without clunk) is gone. I think it was the starter. It was truly a mess in there. The grease was all but gone. The carbon buildup was incredible! What was amazing is that the brushes were in spec even with all the carbon inside the starter. Anyway, after the rebuild it starts up very quickly and smoothly as well as it "Seems" quicker starting less rotations to start. My bike never had the clunk noise, I'm not sure if that is a good thing but once in a while it would make a whizz and screech. I think it was the dried out grease. Once again I appreciate this forum and this thread, even without the pictures, helped me focus in on some things and plan a repair route. ^ ![]() |
