Timing Belts 84-85 86+ could be similar
I'm in the process of replacing the timing belts on my 84 Gl1200A and am looking for the plug for the timing mark on the crankshaft. It seems as if all the manuals refer to it, one refers to the plug on top of the engine but not exactly where the plug is located. Tricky's posting was a lot of help and shows the plug, with the timing mark visable, in the second pic. But I can't seem to find it on my engine. Is it visable in the pic below?

Bob,

Stand on the left side of your bike, squat down and look at the fuel petcock. Now look down and to the left of the petcock a couple of inches. You should see the timing mark plug, directly under the rear carb linkage.

The new belts are on and everything appears to be OK. Would it be a good idea to fire it up, for a short time, to verify installation, before putting the radiator back on?

That's what I did, after rotating the engine by hand about 12 times. Don't let her run long though!!

WOW ! It lives. New belts, new plugs, runs great. Thanks to all for all the advise, instructions, & pictures. It would not have happened without your input. I'll start putting it all back together. Should be on the road soon...it's been a long winter.
Thanks Again

Just finished changing the belts on my '87 yesterday. Went without a hitch, though I had to take the rad out for the first time of any of my numerous belt changes. It was my first change on a 1200. Kinda tight with the rad in there. Got the covers off but knew I wouldn't have a hope getting them to go back in. Changed anti-freeze, thermostat, hoses while I was at it. Just a little note about that viewing port; make sure to close it BEFORE you fire it up. Don't ask how I know.

Greetings,
Just got took my 87 Aspencade apart to change the belts, bike has 74k on it. No idea if they have ever been changed before - I bought it at 50k. Existing belts "look fine", they are Honda brand. I have new belts I bought on ebay, just got yesterday. They have no brand name on them but both say made in Mexico, TB 070. They are supposed to be identical but one says 353A on it and the other says 373B, both have 88 teeth.

Do you think I'm ok using these "no brand" belts? I checked with Honda yesterday and new belts from them are an unbelievable $93.00 per belt, but worth it if necessary.

Pls share thoughts.

Thx, Lex

No belt for your bike is worth $90 + . Go to a good parts house. Gates belts T070 about $15 bucks each. Do a search on this forum, someone did a list of belt # of different brands.

I got Dayco belts at AutoZone for $13.70 each. Work just fine. Dayco Belts are Made by Gates, at least that what it stated on the box.
