FAN Question

I've read a many ideas and opinions on when the fan should come on but does anyone have the Honda factory spec of when the fan should cycle.

Some folks say at 4 bars some at 5, 6, 7 etc.....


Mine is not on in the morning but by the time I get to work and it is at 6 bars, it is running when I park the bike.

After work it will be off usually at start up... But kick on somewhere down the road. I can't hear these things at highway speed.

However the bike can sit for just two hours and before I start it up, as soon as I turn the key to ON, the fan comes on.

So over night cool and it does not come on at startup
off for a few hours and it comes on at start up.

The bike runs fine, not hot, legs are not cooking, sits arou 5-6 bars... any concern here?

The Honda manual says you can run between 2 - 8 bars, if it gets to 9 bars stop and investigate. I think the ambient tempter and altitude make a difference. Most people seem to run around 5 bars before the fan comes on, mine comes on at 5 bars. I normally run between 2 - 4 bars on normal driving. Other people seem to run at 6 and 7 bars without a problem but most of us are in the spec listed in the manual. As far as my fan it comes on at 5 bars and goes out at 4 bars. I only get to 5 bars on a very hot day if I am in bumper to bumper traffic or sitting still because of road construction or something like that.

I probably over explained again, I ramble.

Basically what is Honda's spec on when the FAN should cycle. I'm not concerned with if my bike running at 6 bars is an issue. Here in July, going outside is already like having someone stuff a hair dryer in your face while riding.

After the bike being off for two hours I guess I would not expect the fan to come back on, however in a west facing garage on a 105 degree day perhaps the bike just has not cooled off enough.

If the fan hasnt shut off after parking the bike for a while even in hot weather, I would suspect the fan switch malfunctioning some how.

The thermostatic switch that controls the fan is suppose to activate the fan @ 200-204 degrees. It should cycle off @ 188-192 degrees.

Wouldn't it be nice if Honda would have put a accurate temp gage with numeric reading on the GL1200? Maybe they could have put it right next to the volt meter. :lol:

????? Would 105 degrees plus being in OKC help? Or Dallas? I think 105 is hot anywhere it occurs unless its a dry heat. Then it's just hot and dry....
