85 GL1200 Broke down yesterday
Bought this bike last year, have put about 2K miles on (Aspencade). It has 113K miles. Ran fine to the Arburetum, we parked and walked for a half hour. Came back and tried to start and got only backfires out exhaust. Bike does not overheat. Initial thought was timing belts but after getting a ride home and getting a truck and trailer, went to pick it up and it started fine, rode it home (6 miles), turned it off, tried to start it with no success. Same backfires out exhaust. Hot Coils? Ingition control box? It is not the chokes. Someone please help, I need something to check.

Thanx,

Mel

Sounds like a "hot soak" problem. Incorrect ignition timing. Check your "pickups" (pulse generators) and possibly the CDI unit. Apply heat to each component until you get something to fail. Hair dryer works best.

It was the pulse generator and with help from people from this board I fixed it. Just bought an '09 and the '85 is for sale now. thanx.
