Tire rub solved!
I took the saddle bags off my 1200I and had my daughter & boyfriend sit on the bike. With the extra weight of 2 up it makes the clearance between the tire & fender well so close that a big bump would rub. My daughters boyfriend said the p/o mentioned that the rear wheel was a little larger than stock, but I haven't confirmed that. At least I do know where the smell of rubber is coming from now.

Just pump those rear shocks up a little harder. That should take care of the rubber smell.
