Fuel pump test for non fuel injected models

First off, all fuel pumps are not the same.
Turn the ignition switch off. Disconnect the fuel pump relay from the coupler under the ignition coils. Short the white and black wire coupler terminals with a jumper wire. Disconnect the fuel pump outlet line at the 3-way joint and hold a graduated beaker under the tube. Turn the ignition switch on, let fuel flow into the beaker for 5 seconds, then turn the ignition switch off. Multiply the amount in the beaker by 12 to determine the fuel pump flow capacity per minute. Fuel Pump Minimum Flow: 500 cc (1 6.9 oz) /minute If you don't have this flow then you can chase your tail looking for the problem. If the pump will not deliver and there are no obstructions then shell out for the correct pump.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Wondering if there is a MAXIMUM flow that cannot be exceeded????(as I have an aftermarket on mine)
Or does that just build up line pressure and the carbs drink what they need? I still wonder why my carbs drink more than most.... |

Hi Marty. Volume "excess" wouldn't be an issue, however, too high discharge pressure could overcome the needle and seat causing fuel to "dribble" past effectively raising the float level. I would suspect if your plugs are burning clean and not fouling, you should be okay in that respect. Insufficient fuel volume or too low float level can cause poor economy. It's like flushing two toilets, when you only need one

I have checked my Clymer manual for my 1986 Aspencade and I'm not finding anything under the coils. Nor do I see anything with a white and black wire near the coils...a little help please?
