Stator Test from Honda Manual
Did you cut both connectors at the regulator completly out? I did and have had no problems since..

I have continuity between yellow leads...so the stator coils are intact. BUT, I also have continuity from stator leads to ground...so the stator is grounded out. Am I right? Meaning, my stator is bad...or at least grounded out (already replaced it once). Let me know if I am interpreting this wrong.

Also, the coupler looked good, but when I got looking closer...sure enough, it was melted inside the coupler.

Being the idiot that I am, I nipped the wires and lost track of my order before I got them labeled "1, 2, 3". Sometimes I really am disappointed with myself.

Two questions: 1) My stator is bad, based on these tests, right? 2) How do I sort out which wire belong to which, when I replace my stator, again?

Fret not, about the wires anyway, it doesn't matter which is connected to which.

If your getting a continuity to ground on any of the three yellow wires coming from the stator then I would suggest you have a short to ground at the stator.

I changed out two prior to installing an external alternator, the third alternator was still working but I wasnt prepared to pull the engine a third time.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Alternator Stator Inspection
Remove the left side cover.
Disconnect the alternator and regulator/rectifier coupler.
Check for continuity between the leads, and between the leads and ground.
Replace the stator if there is no continuity between the leads, or if there is continuity between the leads and
ground.
new stator not on bike, what should it read between leads? what setting on digital meter? 2000k, 200k, 20k, 2000, or 200? I bought a new heavy duty stator that I have question the seller about and can't seem to get correct answers. Its costing $800.00 to have stator replaced plus cost of stator and I don't think stator I purchased is as stated. At 2000k ohms and at 200k ohms, meter reads 0.00. And at 2000 ohms and 200 ohms it reads 1.2. Is the stator heavyduty and are these readings correct?

Ok, now someone help me with this. All connections are good, replaced and soldered. I however have continuity between the yellows, and unfortunately also from the yellows to ground. What is puzzling though is that when I do the AC voltage check I have good AC voltage, 50v or so @ 3000 rpm? One wire is about 3 volts lower than the other two. I do have a small charge at the battery, builds to mid 13volt until the fan comes on then struggles to stay above 12volts. Figuring I should have 14 to 15 before the fan comes on. I just don't want to condemn the stator if its ok. Do the wires ever ware through just outside the windings where you can possibly repair them?

All I can add is the capture from the manual....

The manual does not mention measuring AC current.

Suggestion..... Poorboy external alternator.
