I have three gl1200 frames in the garage. The vin number (label) is on the left side of the steering neck. I suppose these are the numbers you are missing. Check on the RIGHT side of the steering neck. Frame numbers are stamped there. I've checked mine and the frame numbers match the VIN numbers exactly on all three of my frames.

thanks for the reply but sadly all the frame no's are missing except the one i mentioned so if you could check your frames to see if these no' exist on the rear cross rail would be a great help as this would establish if my no's are factory stamped.

Can you send a pic of where these numbers are located? As far as I know, the only "identification numbers" are the frame, and the engine. Everything else uses labels. How many numbers in the string that you found? Sad

Sorry, didn't find any pictures. The number string you show doesn't have enough information to be any kind of serial number. Most likely an assembly or quality stamp. My frame's have short strings like that, but they don't correspond to any of the serial numbers. I also can't seem to find any information on the number of standards made or their vin ranges. You'd think with the aid of the internet, that information would be right at our finger tips. Strange.

Hi, you bet it is strange u.k. honda can't even help no wonder i'm having trouble finding spare parts for the bike, and as i believe i have the only one in the uk things are nearly impossible. if it wasn't for the internet and sites like this and naked goldwings and not forgeting the steve saunders site i think i would go crazy, you would think someone stateside might know [being point of manufacture] but it is knowing who to ask/approach it doese not help not having no vin no's to quote

Is it possible the frame on your bike has been replaced with a factory new one at some time. If so there would be no vin. #'s on it.

Great point. V.I.N. numbers would no longer apply. Possibly the numbers on the frame are production numbers. I knew there was a reason I came here! But it makes me wonder why the frame would have had to be replaced. Salvage? Rust? Poor welds? Twisted?
It's looking more and more like you'll never find your bike's "true" identity. Pity.
But you don't need VIN numbers to enjoy the ride. Smile

thanks guys for your help but even if the frame was replaced the v5/ title deeds would tell me the old no's but instead all i got was a v5 for a aspy of the correct year, as i said the leagal side is all done now it just left me wondering about its past and as no one seems to know much about the 84 std model i.e production no's etc or even the other models for that year, so it seems this will one of life little mysterys .
