84 interstate starter problem
Hi . I am a new member here near Philly. Today's weather was great, so I pulled out the old gal, and the battery was verry low. I hooked up to my van as I have done in the past to jump the bike. It cranked well a few times, but did not start. Trying again, it would not crank, made whirring sound, and the tachometer went up to about 2500 rpm. I left the battery on slow charge, have lights etc, but no crank. Anybody have an idea what happened? I've had this bike for about 2 years, 19,000 miles, never a cough. HELP!! I got to go ride!!! Thanks, Dave

Sure sounds like the starter drive has gone bad or it's just the typical Gold Wing starter drive acting up in cold weather. If your oil is too thick, 20W50 it may be causing the rollers on the one way clutch in the starter drive to be too slippery due to the thick oil. If your oil is old and sludged up this can also cause a problem. Try placing a heater under the bike for a few hours and let the oil warm up and try starting the bike again and see what happens. If you get it started warm it up and change the oil to a lighter viscocity such as 10W30 if you are going to be using the bike often in the winter.

as vic mentioned, after a sit a lot of these "sprag clutch" starters will whirrrr rather than engage... usually a lighter oil helps, or try draining a quart and adding a quart of MMO and run it for a couple of hundred miles and then replace the oil.... years ago I actually rebuilt the starter clutch on my 1000.... and while the zen of becoming one with your motorcycle is importatnt, I wouldn't do it again

thanks for the insight. Funny thing, I went out late the night of the problem, and expected the same thing, but to my surprise Big Grin the bike cranked normally and started right up as usual, so I got to go on a midnight ride! And it started right up yesterday as well. two rides in January! I'm trying to make it 3 days in a row. I will change to a lighter oil but first some mmo for good luck. thanks and I'll keep you posted ..... Dave

It may never act up again so you may not need to risk an additive in your oil that could cause other problems but it's your bike.
