IPOD System for 87 1200 Interstate
After much thought I am looking for an IPOD system which I can put on the bike, Most radios are over 7 inches deep in which I have only 6 inches to do an install. The radio that was installed when I bought the bike is one of the old dial types with cassett. So, even if I have to have something in the whole I would rather have IPOD recorded music then a radio.. Anyone have the same or simular experience?

thanks

Mike

How do you connect your Ipod to the bike? Most guys I've seen use a cassette adaptor.

I use an FM modulator, you can plug an ipod into the side of it with a mini jack or you can do what I do and use a flash memory stick like in the picture.

How does the FM modulator work Tricky? Is it like a wireless transmitter?

Yes, there are 7 preset frequencies that you can use in the lower end of the fm band.

you set you radio to one of them and switch on.

The problem with my set up is that if you turn it off then you start again at the begginning of the list. You can pause it as long as you dont turn it off your OK. There wouldnt be that problem if you used an Ipod or similer where you could search for music, but when I am riding I just have a lod of stuff in my 2 gig flash mem, it takes quite a while to get through them.

If look closely you will see that I use a duel type cig outlet, the other outlet I use with the GPS.

Actually if my buddy rides within 20 feet he can tune it in also, the transmitter is fairly strong.

So the headphone jack from the Ipod plugs in to the modulator and the sound comes out the bike's stereo?

Pretty slick Tricky.

How about more detail on that modulator?

Price, where to buy it, what problems you can have with it?

This is the one,

but I bought one for the same in C$ December at Canada Computers. I bought at the shop in Hamilton but it's tough to find it on the website.

This one is more expensive but it has the ability to tune to any frequency on the radio, thats a plus.

Problems, Being small buttons one has to set it up before riding, and if you go into an area that has an FM radio signal and your using it on the modulator then you have to change it.

I used it in my car with the laptop hooked to it and with Streets and trips running with the GPS, now I have voice directions. A novelty really.

Thanks for the excellent info Tricky.

A talking GPS on a motorcycle would be very helpful if you can figure that one out.

Thanks for the information on the IPOD< those ideas would work if I had a radio installed on the bike. My idea is to use the stock speakers connected to some devide which would have the IPOD connected. When I bought the bike the radio that was on the bike was installed below the instrument cluster. It was an older model which had the knobs, they had routed out of wood an extension to hold the radio. Once the radio was out I had a larger hole with nothing to close it up. I am useing aircraft aluminum diamond plate to cover that space. If I need to put a normal radio within the system I would have to find another place to install or figure out a new device to hold the radio.

idea's???

thanks

The cable kit is available to incorporate a voice GPS into the later model wings but don't know about the 1200's, nothings impossible if you want to throw the $$ at it.

JM-CFRG-GL18 @ $314 for a cable kit from Sierra a bit much really but I guess it depends on your priorities

Presumably you have the Interstate. You can install a marine type radio in your bike which does fit. There are auto radios that fit also and there is an adapter that you can use to help with the install, I think they are still available. You just have to check out the dimensions of the radios.

Some of the auto radio's have a 1/8th mini jack for the Ipod. There are also instructions on the NET to add a mini socket the the type III Honda/Panasonic radio.

One of the annoyances about adding a radio to the Interstate is the lack of muting switch and auto volume control which the Aspencade is equipped with, in my opinion after having both models I like the auto control and muting switch.

Thanks for the link and info, once I looked its the same bevel as I have already, I think I will find a new post radio and install it, at least then I will be able to ad the IPOD in.

thanks much.. the bike is being preped for paint, new tires/breaks and exhaust and just enough chrome will make it look like a new 1200. I will throw pics on as I complete this project.

thanks

I had an FM modulator that I used with my MP3 player, but found that as I travelled to different places I would get radio broadcasts interfering with my transmitter. Next step was to go to a cassette adapter. That worked better but then I had these darn wires hanging about my radio and dash. My next step will be to put in an in-line modulator on my bike that goes in the aerial line. The other problem was the danger of trying to operate my MP3 player while riding. Solution: I have located a personal CD disk player that plays MP3 CD's and has a detachable remote control. It also has a very long anti-skip memory. I can put the disk player under my tank cover on top of my fuse box and mount the remote control on top of my tank cover with some velcro. This will make operation while riding much safer and everything except the remote will be out of site. When I park the bike, I can just remove the remote and put it under the tank cover. I have also located a power supply to hook up to the CD player so I don't have to worry about batteries. The whole outfit should cost me about $140.00.
