Be sure to grease those splines!!!
I originally posted this on the Steve Saunders Goldwing Forum, but thought it deserved some play here too. I believe others can learn from my mistake.

Marty

Well, the long drawn out saga of my broken wing is over. After several years of changing rear tires without bothering to grease the final drive splines, (hey what did I know?) I developed a clunking in the rear end that got worse, and finally last July, when getting an emergency tire repair while on the road, found out the hard way that I had toasted my final drive and drive flange splines, which is what the clunking was all about. Boise Honda dealer said the bike was too dangerous to drive, but I limped it home and let it sit all the rest of the summer, while I looked for good used parts for a reasonable price. (There are not that man used final drives and drive flanges for an 87 GL1200).

A couple of months ago, John from Florida sold me a good final drive for a reasonable p[rice, and just last week, got the drive flange off of Ebay. So, put her back together a couple of days ago and went for a ride yesterday, and huraay, no clunking.

So, just a warning folks, if you do your own wheel/tire changes to save money, be sure to put some moly paste on the splines whenever the rear wheel is offl. It might save you a bunch of money, and a half a year of riding. (I am really glad for my spare bike).

Very good warning and I just want to ad to make certain that you make sure that you use a minimum MOLY 60 paste (NOT GREASE) or better on the rear splines and flange.

Thank you for the advice. I have not pulled the rear tire off since I have had the bike (couple months now) I think I better figure how to do that and check it out before we head out on our trip next week.
Thanks again
