Has anyone seen a Poorboy Turbo kit? Runs reverse custom 4 into 1 titanium exhausts, turbo mounts up high above the rad out front, uses stock air box, and Kehin fuel injection. Adjustable waste gate with optional chrome gate vent pointed out the right side, and low mount right side 4 inch exhaust stack. No muffler. Optional shorty dump under right side or dual fish tail pipes out past the bags. 8 psi without intercooler option gives 50% torque increase 3000 to 6000 rpm - normalizes (maintains hp) up to 12000 ft above sea level. Runs on 87 octane gasohol. Auto calibrates if you get your hands on some 100 octane real gasoline.

My 1800 is quicker off the line due to lower grearing and more torque at lower RPM and seems to have quicker throttle response. Top end I've seen about 10 more mph out of the 1800. However you'all got me thinking I need to take both to the local drag strip where they have fun nights just to see (and hope I don't break anything :twistedSmile. My last time there was with my '84 V65 Magna 12sec flat @ 109 mph....

The reason the GL1200 does not feel so quick to most is because the vast majority of owners drive their 1200's like a granny and shift at much less than 5000 rpm not realizing that the 1200's redline is 7000 rpm or better depending on setup. With polished and ported heads, special 3 angle valve job, raised compression and open exhaust my own GL1200 has pulled strong and cleanly to 8000 rpm and would lift the front wheel a bit when snapping the throttle open when rolling at 3500 rpm in first gear. Bottom end torque is not the 1200's forte and you must make the engine rev to obtain decent power unlike the 1800 which makes gobs of low end power at very low rpm's but it only revs to about 5000 rpm. Consider it this way if you will, old Cadillac cars often came with 500 cubic inch engines and they could pull tree stumps with all that bottom end torque but in a drag race against a small, high performance 4 cylinder car those big engined Cadillacs would most often lose the race because the little engines could scream. The GL1200 engine is a somewhat high tech 4 cylinder design whereas the GL1800 is a large displacement, relatively low tech design but each engine is built to be solid, reliable and built to run for many, many troublefree miles if you take good care of them and taking good care of them means blowing out the carbon occasionally. :d

Looking forward to your dragstrip results.

Now that I would like to see.

We sure didn't buy a wing to smoke out speed records, we got them because they are cool bikes that are smooth and run forever! My buddy riding his Honda 1300 Sport Touring leaves me in the dust. We're riding classics here, enjoy! This is a bit like comparing that gal I've been married to for 28 years to a cheerleader, but I wouldn't trade her for nuthin'. Same for my wing, luv this machine!

Hmmm, I treat my wife like she is a youthful cheerleader and she responds like a youthful cheerleader with a lot of wisdom, but, now you make me wonder if I should start treating my wife like she's a frail old lady just because she's old. Somehow, I don't think she'd like that. :d

i don't know about 1/4 mile times because vic is right , most of us are just rolling along on the open road in 5th gear but my 1200 is not quite in the the power band and needs a downshift to get going where as my 1500 is always in its power band

The thing of it is, I'm a very conservative rider in city traffic until some cager starts to crowd me ... or even, rarely, tailgate me. Then I kick her into the next lower gear, crank the engine up to 5-6,000 rpm .... and suddenly, ALL the traffic is 1/4 of a mile behind me -- in my rear view mirrors. That's all the performance I need. But it is nice to know that very few cars can beat the 1200 GoldWing on that kind of drag -- which adds another degree of confidence and relaxation to my riding! :d

I know this is an old thread but was just reading it as I didnt remember it. My original 85 wing felt quicker to me than any gl1800 I've ridden. Maybe because like Vic says.. it would pull hard all the way to 8000rpm instead of only 6000rpm like the gl1800. Also someone mentioned "about the same weight"??
the gl1800 is about 200lbs heavier.. that's alot of weight on a bike..
Still wish they'd come out with a new gl1200, with todays updates..that could be awesome.

Weight is a big factor. A new 1200 would be nice with fuel injection & larger alternator. I've had three 1200's and the 85LTD was noticeability faster & smoother.

Gary took his GL1800 to the strip - the times appear at the end of the clip.
