Molly grease
My Honda dealer did the same thing. They used regular axle grease. They suggested Blueray.

I did find a grease at Autozone that was mostly Moly grease.

As GL1200 said I bought mine right off the shelf of the Honda store. Some things should not be substituted (IMHO) and this one deserves no shortcuts.

I agree on that dealer issue, they told me they simply use normal wheel bearing grease!!!

While we are on the topic, when I was reassembling the drive shaft the Haynes Manual says to remove the clip and washer at the engine end of the drive shaft as it was used only for manufacturing installation. This is scary for me to do, I dont like to leave parts on the bench!!! Anyone actually followed the manual and/or had any problems??

I just had a 946g tub of Molykote M-77 Paste given to me; does anyone know if I can use it for my splines? It says it has 60% Molybdenum disulfide and siloxane, I think that is silicone base. I was told that Honda sells it but it is not Moly 60. I don't know the difference or if it is safe to use. The price on it is $68. not that that means anything but if it is ok for my splines I will use it instead of buying Moly 60, I ran out last Fall.

If you are speaking of needing moly grease to lube the final splines when you take the rear wheel off to have the tire changed, or whatever, that takes no specialized tools. Just some patience. The final splines come apart when you pull the wheel, you need to clean those and apply moly 60 during re-assembly.

Hope this helps.........

Is it really that simple? If so, I am much happier about getting my GL1200 further in the maintenance cycle.

bschultz Wrote:Is it really necessary to use 60 molly grease on the final drive splines and if so why? I have found some grease with molly in it but I don't know at what percentage. It's hight disc brake grease from napa.

It is absolutely necessary to use moly 60 or better paste on the final drive splines. The moly 60 paste goes on the splines and the carrier (grease) gets washed away but the molybdenum stays as a high pressure dry lubricant coating on the metal surfaces. If you just use regular grease it will attract road dust and effectively turn the lubricant into a grinding compound which will eat up the metal surfaces, sometimes completely.

Any Honda dealer can order the moly 60 paste for you.

I reccommend replacing the O-rings on the rear spline as well... The idea is to prevent water from getting in to the splines in the first place... It also will prevent the grease from washing away... Any high moly content grease should do the trick, but just like with engine oil, better is better...
I also highly reccommend greasing the front end of the drive shaft and front of the U-joint splines as well... Do replace the swing arm rubber boot if any signs of a hole exist... The idea here is if you can keep all water out, then you also keep most all contamination out as well...

You guys may think this is silly, but I look forward to tinkering with the bike. Seeing all these threads make me want to play more. Smile

I may need to get a second job to keep up with all of this. LOL!
