What brand and type of oil do you use in your Wing and why?

Wow.... I put in the t6 synthetic 5w 40 today and I gotta say I saw a strong improvement in quiet shifting (super smooth super quiet) every gear meshed perfectly.
As the rest of you I have tried them all. It was not a long ride but long enough to see the difference. Can't wait to try the open road but this seems to be the best I have used in the bike. |

Amsoil 10-40 Motorcycle Synthetic in my motorcycles. My GL1200 shifts like a Suzuki GSX-R now. just kidding.

Amsoil 10-40 is what I use also and I think it is great, I will stick with it.

Last year I switched to full synthetic and use Mobil motorcycle, this year I went with Amsoil synthectic. I also used Amsoil's synthetic gear oil in the final drive. After reading tech reports on oils, synthetic wins over non-synthetic and Amsoil preformed the best.

gwrra forums pages on classic wings, most of what i read there says rotella T 20w50 full synthetic work best in the 4 cylinder wings; 1000, 1100, and 1200.

Ah, an oil thread. I LOVE oil threads. They can go on forever without anything being gained, but despite what most people say about them, they post on them anyway. I have had nearly 40 bikes over the past 36 years, about 1/3 of them bought new. I have used many different oils over the years, but they have all had one thing in common. They were all 20w50. I refuse to use a lighter weight oil in any motorcycle. I recently bought my first Goldwing, and it had dirty oil in it. So I changed the oil, and put Walmart SuperTech 20w50 in it, along with a new Emgo filter. I will change this oil every 500 miles, maybe less if it gets really dirty, and continue to do so until the engine is cleaned out. I will then switch to my favorite oil, Castrol GTX car oil, 20w50 weight. I doubt I will ever use anything else from now on, unless I should run out and can't get it for some reason. I would much rather have an engine full of cheaper clean oil than more expensive dirty oil. I use this in all 6 of my bikes, and both my vintage cars. I buy it by the case in one gallon jugs. I change it often, between 1000 and 3000 miles (the GW will probably be every 3000 once I get the engine cleaned out). I change it every 1000 in my '64 Fairlane and '66 Ford F100. I save up the old oil in two 5 gallon water jugs (the kind that go upside down on water coolers), and when they are both full, I take them down to the local Pep Boys and dump it in their used oil barrel. There are many claims made for synthetic and motorcycle specific oil, but in todays world, regular car oils have gotten so good most of those claims no longer have much meaning to me. Just stay away from that EPA designed "energy conserving" stuff, change your oil often, and you should be fine.

I never heard of Rotella 20w50, my company has 21 service trucks and vans, and the owner uses Rotella 14w40 in all of them. It is a typical fleet oil, and works as well in a pickup as it does an 18 wheeler. But I've never used it in bikes, because of it's weight. If it were available in 20w50 that might change things. Of all the considerations when selecting a motorcycle oil, I consider the 20w50 weight to be the most important. |

If I might add my two cents worth,
I just changed oil in my 84 Aspencade and purchased Amsoil synthetic because this is what the former owner used. I found this oil to be quite expensive at $16.99 Canadian / Liter (actually 946 ml) making the oil cost come to $68.32. I am really wondering if I am reaping the benefits here, when I could pick up a 5 liter jug of Mobil synthetic at Canadian tire for around $37 if I buy on sale. It seems amsoil has increased their prices and while it is likely a good product Im not sure its so much better then Mobil. But I could be wrong |

you don't want to use an energy saving oil in your bike the usually cause the clutch to slip. I don't use oil for cars in my bike because the trans will shear the oil. tried the t-5 and t-6 rotella and thought they were just ok. the amsoil and mobile 1 for bikes didn't play well with the lifters on my 1500 or 1200 wing ( 1200 was given to my niece ) so I went back to Castrol 4t dino oil in the wing
