GL1500 panniers on a GL1200A ???

Hi. I have problems with my GL1200A original panniers and here in New Zealand there are not many options for used replacement parts.
There are two sets of GL1500 panniers available from wreckers. I figure that I will have to replace the rear guard so the light bar matches, etc.
Has anyone else done this or knows if the shape of the 1500 panniers will allow fitment. I have only seen pics of 1500 panniers and they are too far away to see before buying.
Any help would be great.

1500 bags are longer and are side opening which operates via cable
