Old Post
Good morning all, I have been looking for a aftermarket cooling fan to put on my wing, I found a post that was posted here but the photos are gone and that is what I need to see how he put the fan on. I done a poor boy conversion on my wing but after many hours of working with the oem fan I could not get it away from the belt. I followed the post's and done what they said.
I want to put a elec. fan on her but don't know the best way, I tried one on the out side but my
fender push's in on the fan when breaking. Has anyone done this and if so photos and instructions please. Thanks much MCFF. Huh

Hi MCfirefighter, I too have just completed the Poorboy conversion & though the alternator belt does run close to the radiator I still have a good 5mm plus clearance. Did you have to space out the alt pulley & is the alternator within the dimensions recommended? I did look at putting an electric fan on as well but even going to a small 7" fan the belt was going to struggle to get by it. I used an alternator from a Suzuki swift rated at 55 amps, apart from chopping off the lower rear lug it fitted well.

I searched many types of alt. and found one that fit a Toyota don't rem model. But I could not get the belt to go by the fan, I know I prob did something alittle diff. but I am not going to change anything now.

I understand this is an old post and all.
It sounds like you added the external alternator which may be a different shape than the one used in the Poor Boy kit.
That said, I am going to assume you fabricated your own kit.
That said, there isn't a bunch of space down there and saving some $$ and fabbing something up can be a big task as millimeters are in shot supply. I know. I fabricated my own. (Sorry Don - but money is very, VERY tight)
Placement of the drive pulley as close to the timing belt covers is the key because everything else is built from there, the radiator needs to be pushed out far enough to allow the fan supports to clear the drive belt, and the alternator bracket needs to allow the alternator pulley to align with the drive pulley.
Its all about geometry!
Given you have already tried a fan on the outside of the radiator and it comes in contact with the fender on hard braking, I am going to assume (yea, I know) the drive pulley can be placed closer to the timing belt covers. That is where you will find one solution.
Another solution may be in the use of the fans used to cool computers. Most are bearingless, brushless, and are designed to run continuously for long periods of time.
MAYBE, maybe, mounting some on the back side of the radiator, in the areas where they will not come in contact with the alternator belt, could solve your cooling problem.
But going this route may create more problems.

The best solution might be revisiting your installation and tweaking it to allow the use of the cooling fan as is done with the Poor Boy design.

Good Luck.
