Heard a noise last night
Hello all.
Last night, coming home from a dinner run, I was slowly creeping across some railroad tracks, and heard what sounded like a crack, or some strange sound. It sounded like it came from the left rear.
I put it off that it was the tracks making an odd sound.
I drove about 4 miles, and don't recall the bike feeling odd, but when I got to the next set of tracks, I was going maybe 10 m.p.h., and it felt like the back end slid on me.
After I got across the tracks, I thought that maybe I had ran over the spot where vehicles are stopped, waiting for trains to pass and leaking fluids.
For the next few miles, to me, the bike felt like it had a tire losing air. I get to a stop sign, and get off and shining my flashlight all over, I see no low tires, nor anything that looked broken.
I come the remaining 20 miles to home, and every so often, it again felt like a tire extremely low.
I checked the air in the tires this morning, and neither are low.
I have also laid down and looked around and see nothing apparent.
Now, I'm also wondering if between the noise at the first set of tracks and the slide at the second, that maybe I was just spooked and feeling things that aren't really there.
But, I thought I'd put this to the experts here and see if anyone has had any similar experience and know what might be wrong, if indeed there is something wrong.
Thank you so much for your help.
BTW....it's a 1984 Goldwing Aspencade with about 95k on it.

if the tracks were slanted across the road and it was wet its possible that might be what happened, if your running D404's theres that

Actually, both sets of tracks are pretty perpendicular to the roadway.
No 404's. I have Shinko tires this time, but I have about 3,000 miles on them, and these were completely new things I felt.

What's with 404's? Because that's what I have on my Shadow.

Check for side to side play in your wheel which will feel like a low tire when riding. If there is play then you have a wheel bearing that has worn loose in the aluminum wheel. This was a common problem on the 84's.

had to have to rear tire replaced in canada once and a D404 is all they had, made my mc feel unstable and wore out in 7K miles whereas the E3 i replaced it with now has 25K and going strong, the 404's made crosssing grates in bridges a squeemish affair and on long sweepers mc just did not want to hold a line

side-to-side play or any play for that matter, in the rear wheel
cracked or broken shock support on the final drive unit
loose or stripped lower shock bolt on final drive unit.

Take the saddle bags off, put the transmission in gear (engine off of course - (hey! some are out there)), dedicate 30 minutes or so and poke, prod, wiggle, jiggle, push and shove parts at the back of the bike until you are convinced all is tight and good and as it should be.

My 84I came to be with a broken and repaired shock support on the final drive. It broke again because the original repair did not weld across the break.
I had it welded.
I did the cleanup of excess weld to allow the bolt to go through and the shock body to fit properly.
That was 20 - 25,000 miles ago.

Good Luck and keep us posted.
