I joined this site in June 2015 immediately after purchasing my 1987 GL 1200 Interstate. I'm the 4th owner of the bike and the first 2 owners kept great maintenance records; the same cannot be said about the 3rd, but thankfully he did not own it long. This site has been invaluable to me as I've begun to tackle the major maintenance issues facing this bike. I purchased the bike with 90,013 miles. The information found on this site, coupled with my service manual, have helped me rebuild both front brake calipers, front brake master cylinder, replace stock fork springs with Progressive springs, install new steering bearings (All Balls), repair brittle plastic in the fairings and saddlebags, and the list simply goes on. I cannot say "thank you" enough to each contributor to this site; to those that raise the questions, to those that answer the questions and even to those that, appropriately, question the answers.

Sometimes the "help" has resulted in me realizing that some tasks are above my skill set or my tool set. For example: after reading the various threads on timing belt and tensioner replacement, I decided to have those tasks completed at a local shop.

I visit some of the other Goldwing forums as well, and while I appreciate them, I always find the best advice and information at

I simply don't have the space to tear down the wing or any of my other bikes but I'm lucky because a friend of mine and his dad and brother had a Goldwing shop, they still work out of their garage though

Welcome to this wonderful forum. Lots of nice folks here. TONS of information as well as guidance.
I am the second owner of a 84 Interstate I use as a commuter. I bought my bike with 104,000 miles and she now has 150,000 when a gear in the transmission ground down a shift fork.
I have read extensively and the cause of the wear was either resting your foot on the shift lever while riding ( I don't rest my foot on the shift lever, and I bought the bike from the original owner's son who kept his Dad's bike for two year after his Dad had passed away, so I can't ask him), or the miles. I am still in the process of putting the engine back together..... life gets in the way.... BUT I do a little here and a little there but my point is, read, READ, and read some more and you will able to change your timing belts the next time they need to be done.......
