Starter issues

My 85 aspy like to eat up starters. I have installed three starters in three years. I checked all connections, and check voltage drop from battery (12.85v) to the starter through the switch the starter received 12.83v. But still the starter will not engage checked and had .002 ohms of resistance on the ground side from the starter case to the battery. Any other suggestions of what I need or should check. I'm getting tired of replacing starters. Thanks for any help

sounds like the starter clutch if it wont engage.
Over the years the thing gets gummed up, The hard way to fix is to pull the engine apart, the easy way that most times helps is to add a can of seafoam to the engine oil (remove the same amount of oil prior to adding) run the bike for about 300 miles then do an oil change, this usually does the trick.
Sometimes the problem shows up as starter not disengaging when the starter button is released.

I second the Seafoam idea. I had a starter that would grind and not engage. I tried the Seafoam thing vs taking the motor out to replace the starter clutch. I have not had issues with it for two seasons now.

Also check:
-the battery cable ends are clean and corrosion free and not just tight
(pay close attention to the ground at the frame)
-maybe the battery cables are in need of replacement
-does the replacement starter have a good internal ground?

bench testing the replacement starter to get an idea of its 'spin' rate then, with the spark plugs removed, what is the 'spin' rate and how does it compare to the bench test? If there is a dramatic difference, I would suspect something other than the starter.

The easiest remedy is the Seafoam additive suggested and seconded, then do the hardware checks.

When it comes to electric issues, think like an electron...... the only way one can move is if there is a power source and a good ground, with an allowed amount of resistance. Too much resistance or insufficient ground or too little power will not allow the electric devices to work as they are designed.
