got a chance between rains storms to check this and no there isn't a wire going from the battery to the alternator to excite it or I don't see one anyway

dont know what alternator you used in the conversion but unless its a single wire alternator there should be one wire connected to the alternator to provide a reference voltage so the regulator in the alternator knows when to charge and maintain the battery
also did you check that the fuse(or circuit breaker) between the alternator and battery hasn't tripped, you should see battery voltage either side of the fuse if it hasn't tripped, even with key off

This is the Geo Alternator there should be a switched wire attached to the IGN spade, I take mine from the accessory + connection in the fuse box.

I use the Geo alternator and use the ACC on fuse box (of an 84I) to excite the alternator and have no issues.

got it going about an hour ago! the connector on the exciter wire didn't have a good connection on the alternator, got that taken care of then rode down the block to a friends house. he checked it out with his battery / alternator tester and once again its charging. thanks for the advice everyone

I see some have a narrower alternator pulley than the one that comes on the geo metro alternator, how can I get one

problem with the wider 4 rib pulley might be interference with the fairing.
