speedometer gear interchangeable?

I'm working on an 83 Aspy with a broken speedometer gear in the box assy. the part number for the 83 & 84 box assy is the same. The 83 is shown as a unit, with no beakdown on the gear in the box. The 84 box is broken down to show the speedo gear as replaceable.
I have removed the 83 speedo box and pulled the broken gear out.
The 83 box assy is $60+, the speedo gear is less than $20.
Since the NHA number is the same, can I use the 84 speedo gear to repair the 83 box assy?

I'll answer my own question. The 84 gear has a different diameter and won't fit into the 83 gearbox. However, the 84 box with an 84 gear will will work on the 83 wheel.

Now I need a box and gear for an 84, since I used the 84 box assy I had on the 83 wheel. Anybody got any 84 box assemblies they aren't using? PM me if you do with a price please.

You have stumbled upon an interesting situation about Japanese Motorcycle manufacturers....
interchangeable parts!

I used the coils from a 1970's Suzuki GT in my 1969 Bridgestone Dual Twin, Hurricane Scrambler. Obviously, the part numbers were different, but they were the same part with the same markings and mounting holes.

I used the points, condensers, and point plate from an early 60's Honda Benley in a 1964 Honda CT200. Different part numbers, but IDENTICAL!

This takes time, reading and searching........... but it is out there.
