Regulator/rectifier
Has anyone ever run into the issue where the bike is charging great at an idle but when you get going the volts drop from 14.3 to 12.1 or less?
Then yesterday my regulator fried, melted the resin and stayed shorted out even after I shut the key off.
I removed the regulator and installed my spare and it's acting the same way.

Is there a chance that I got a bad batch of regulator/rectifiers?

Thanks.
Johan

Have you disconnected the stator at the three prong at the battery and tested the output of the stator per the manual?
Also inspect ALL of the wire insulation and plastic plugs in the charging circuit looking for burnt, melted or oxidation.

It is a big step, but installing a Poorboy kit may be in your future.

I have done the stator test and it's working fine, turns out that the aftermarket Regulator/Rectifier could not handle the power that the LTD stator puts out and burnt the resin out of the regulator.
I have now ordered a better Regulator and should be here this week.
I have the Poorboy kit and am planning to do the install this winter bit it drives me crazy when there is a problem with something and I just have to find it.
well I did find the issue so I'm happy again.

I have learned so much about these fantastic bikes in the 4 years that I have been on this site and made some great friends.
to all of you who have helped me deal with some challenging issues on my LTD I thank you for from the bottom of my heart.
I have test ridden the 1800s twice but found that I really like the 1200s much better.

I ran into a fellow here at the west coast recently who told me that I should junk my LTD as they are unreliable,
so I asked him how they are unreliable? he couldn't give me an answer. I have gone on a few really nice longer trips and it is my belief that it's as reliable as you make it as it is with any make or model.

Hey guys, it's been a long time since I've been here on this thread
I am now in the process of doing the poorboy alternator conversion and so far going well
Back to work tomorrow so it'll have to wait now till I get back in 4 days as I drive a truck for a living so I'll get back to it on my next days off.
I truly look forward to finishing this project and get riding again.

I am so thankful for this forum and all you guys have helped me so much since I bought this bike and joined this forum,
I will always try and do my part to help the next guy to however I can and I'll make sure I check in more often again
