Squeak from the rear wheel
The 1986 Interstate has just started to make a squeaking noise that sounds likes a rusty door hinge. I first noticed it the last time I rode it, with a strange noise that was coming from the rear area. Last night, with it on the center stand, I spun the rear wheel and it's making this squeaking sound, off & on, that sounds like a rusted house hinge, not anything motorcycle related. The brakes appears to be ok so I doubt that anything to do with this. Maybe it's the final drive and / or the driveshaft. I will check the oil level and change that this weekend. The question is, has this happen to anyone else, and if so, what was determine to be the cause or problem that they found.

Thank you for any possible help here. Ride safe.Smile

i would imagine that the driven flange is most likely needing to be lubed with Moly 60 which willl require the wheel to be removed

A stethoscope comes in handy in situations like this.
Probing will allow you to pinpoint the source of the squeak.
Short of that, given the expense of final drive replacement parts, as was mentioned, it may be a good idea to re-lube the final drive with some Moly 60.
Rear wheel removal isn’t too bad of a job.

Good Luck.

Wow, could be so many things. U-joint, brake pads, brake hose rubbing on disk, backing plate rubbing on disk, splines, axle bearings, final drive, etc. You need to isolate the location of the sound with a stethoscope http://www.harborfreight.com/mechanics-s...41966.html so we can help you more.
