TPS sensor
The Throttle Position Sensor "TPS" is a finnicky sensor. If you are getting lousy gas mileage, running rough especially in colder weather, getting a bit of smoke from exhaust and the engine is in general running crappy it could be this sensor. I don't want to go into how it works here except to say the resistance value can change over time which sends a wrong signal to the engine. It is suppose to be .08v and if it drifts off this and goes high like 1.0v the engine will run terrible, it'll run but you'll know something is'nt right. This sensor is built to not be tampered with so it has solid rivets holding the 2 parts together but the rivets can be drilled out taken apart adjusted and put back together again. There is good info about this sensor and how it can be fixed. My son Justin took his apart adjusted it put it back together and now his 85 LTD purrs like a kitten again. His mileage was consistenly 5 to 10 MPG less than my 85 LTD even though mine is Triked. Now his is doing a bit better than mine...which it should.New TPS sensors are still available but they can also be fixed. I did'nt search this site to see if there is any info on the TPS Sensor but I would'nt be surprised if there is.

Is the TPS on fuel injected and carburated models?

on page 10-26 of the LTD and SEI supplement it states that the voltage should be 0.475v to 0.495v initial

sparky, where are you getting this different figure?

And, how do you adjust it?
1986 SEi Limited Edition. 1985 Aspencade
If it's not broke, I can fix that!

you have to drill out the rivets that now keep the tps stationary, retap the holes and use new bolts to lock the adjustment, its unusual for the adjustment to change unless something is going wrong with the tps,the tps is tied to the throttle shaft and sends a signal to the computer which effectively changes the pulse width of the injectors, this controlling proper fuel flow, pretty much the same way a carb works

If that is what the manual says the specs are go with it, The spec I gave may be what it was before my son adjusted his, he said its very touchy and just tightening down the new bolts through it out of spec again so he had to play with it a couple of times when tightening it down.He did what you described..drilled out the rivets.
