This may help, it's the latest diagram I have, the 86 may be somewhat different.

System Inspection
Turn the ignition switch ON.
Move the turn signal switch lever to the right or left. The lever should return to the center position, and the signal/indicator lights continue to flash.
Cancel the turn signals by pushing on the lever and releasing.
If the turn signal doesn't cancel, check the turn signal switch, below and replace if necessary.
If the turn signals don't blink when the switch is moved, check the position relay (page 18-34), and replace if required.
Test ride the motorcycle and check the system while moving. If the system doesn't operate while moving, check the speed sensor, page 18-36 (Aspencade), or the lead switch, page 18-31 (Interstate).
If the speedometer sensor or lead switch check ok, replace the turn signal cancelling control unit.

Turn Signal Switch Inspection
Remove the top compartment and right coupler holder
cover.
Disconnect the turn signal switch couplers and connector.
Check the continuity of the terminals on the
switch in each position.
R: Br/W to O/W and Gr to Lb
N: Br/W to O/W to Lb/W
L: Br/W to Lb/W and Gr to 0
Move the lever L or R and hold; P to G
With the lever in the center; Push in and hold: Lg/W to G

Position Light Relay Inspection
Remove the position light relay.

Lights/Switches/Instruments
After '84 Self Cancelling Turn Signal System ( ~ ~ . t ~- d )
Connect a fully charged 12V battery to the two relay
terminals shown.
Connect an ohmmeter acrss the other two terminals shown.
The relay is normal if there is continuity without voltage applied and continuity with voltage applied.

Control Unit Replacement
Install a new control unit if the turn signal switch is still not cancelled automatically.
Remove the handlebar holder cover (page 12-17).
Remove the two bolts holding the wire harness cover to the fork bridge and remove the cover.
Remove the two bolts and two screws holding the wind baffle (wind protector). Remove the wind baffle from the bottom of the steering stem.
Remove the wire harness bands and disconnect the connector shown under the top compartment.
Slide the control unit's rubber grommet (at the top of the steering stem) up the wire harness about 6 inches.

Remove the turn signal cancel control unit support bracket screw and bracket.
Remove the two control unit mounting plate bolts and the mounting plate.
Pull the control unit slowly down and disconnect the wire harness connectors.
Remove the control unit.
When installing the new control unit, be sure to align its locating pins with the holes in the mounting plate.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.
