Magnetic Drain Plug
Any merit to installing one of these?

Kinda pricey but, if it works, might be a good item.

I've used them in cars. It will pick up any metal filings or flakes and prevent them from plugging the oil passages. If you have the money, then, yeah, go for it. Won't hurt.

It sure can't hurt your engine Ian, although, it will hurt your wallet.

What would be the point in an aluminum engine?

I'll agree that the advantage is small, but any degradation to the crank, bearings, valves, and rings that creates metal filings might be detectable by using the magnetic plug. Call it an early warning device to let you know wear is occurring.

Most of the internals are not aluminum....wearing gear sets etc may leave small metallic parts..or "chips" floating around in the oil...it's a good thing to "catch" this small trash, however, on most of our 1200 wings...barring any mechanical failures..I'm sure these bits have long passed through the system, but I can sure see the value on newer engines going through the break-in process! It doesn't take much to trash a bearing with a few tiny metal bits! Confusedhock:

Chains, sprockets, camshafts and followers, oil pumps, crankshaft, piston rings, etc. are all made of steel and leave behind particles that could be small enough to pass through the oil filter and cause wear, but, the magnet may capture these particles and keep them from doing any harm to your engine.

How about one for 14.99?

Thanks for the link, saltydog. Seeing as they are fairly close, i.e., Montana, and the price and shipping are reasonable, I ordered one tonight.

THANKS. I just ordered one for the next oil change. The $35 variety is just too expensive for a magnetic plug.

Some years ago, I had one of these magnetic plugs in my Volvo 240 wagon and there was always some metallic fuzz on it at oil changes. So I figured the iron bits are better trapped on the magnet than floating around the engine in the oil. As mentioned above, it certainly cannot do any harm.

Afterward, searching further it turns out that WingsnStuff has magnetic plugs for about $9. However, there are some 35-40 pro and con reviews with some saying they use two of them: one for the final drive. Some of the cons are worth reading.

The base price is good but the shipping cost is pretty steep compared to the $5 for the Montana item.
