Are you wanting to get to the cable? If so you need to remove everything down to the plenum, unbolt the manifolds & turn along with pulling the 4 tubes up. Then moving the whole assembly to the left to gain access to it. At least that's how I got to it to change the choke cable.

There is a wire running to a sensor on top of the crankcase under the carbs that is very awkward to solder back together when you hook it with the carb set like I did while removing them. #-O

You are servicing the choke because it doesn't move? (actually it doesn't reduce the amount of air going to the carburetors (choke), it actually increases the amount of gas going to each carburetor (enrich), accomplishing the same effect by a different means)
Were the carburetors removed and the cable is routed wrong? kinked? Is one (one for each carburetor) of the enricheners sticking? Is the mechanism on the bottom of the carburetor assembly bent or sticking or obstructed? You may be able to get away with lubricating the mechanism. -carburetor removal required You may have to lubricate the enricheners themselves. -remove fairing lowers You may have to loosen the enricheners at the carburetor body to get them to operate freely. Good luck and keep us posted. -Ride On

In your post you mentioned enricheners. What are enricheners? I tried to search for these in my shop manual but could find any information about them. Are they on a 86GL1200i?

I am just being anal (analytical)…..
We all know what a choke is, it is a reduction of air going through the carburetor(s) changing the ratio of fuel to air, reducing the amount of air effectively increases the amount of fuel. This is usually achieved by closing off the throat of the carburetor with a piece of metal or a butterfly. I had an old, Italian bike which used a metal slide to partially cover the throat of the carburetor. Another way of changing the fuel to air ratio is to increase the amount of fuel, or making the engine run rich, (enriching the mixture), no butterfly required. Our GL1200 carburetors don’t have a choke feature on them in the sense of reducing the amount of air, they have a little valve Honda calls a Starter Valve Set (p/n 16050-MG6-003). Honda refers to this feature of the carburetor assembly as the ‘STARTER’. It consists of one valve set for each carburetor and these are joined together by a Starter Link Set and then operated at the left hand controls by the Choke Lever and the Choke Cable. When the choke cable is activated it opens the starter valve for each carburetor thus allowing additional fuel to flow to the engine. If adding a Poorboy alternator, attention needs to be given to the clearance between the alternator body and the left-front carburetor starter valve when the valve is in its open position (choke on) On some fuel injected cars and trucks, because they are EFI, the system may have a COLD START INJECTOR which comes on only when the engine is cold, then the computer will turn that injector off once the engine reaches standard operating temperature. The parts books refer to the cable and lever as a ‘choke’, the valve and lever sets as ‘starter’ but when you look at how the carburetor implements this feature, it actually adds fuel to the system, not reduce air to the system. See, ……..anal…….. I hope this helps. -Ride On
