Will a transmission from an 84 1200 fit an 85 1200i
I've got a heavy howl/whine in the transmission on my 85 GL1200i (all gears) and notice a significant increase in gear noise above 60 mph in OD (sounds like a countershaft is whining up to speed, this noise doesn't happen in lower gears). I have located an 84 engine/transmission. Are the transmissions the same?

I know for a fact that 84/85 gear ratios are different and the rear engine cover is different so best guess is that you would have to pull them apart and check closely about interchangeability. With the price of gaskets and seals and replacement parts and time involved you might be better off finding another 1200 engine for $200 - $500. The last 1200 engine I replaced I found an excellent running engine for $300. and I'm sure there's more out to be had.
