compression
I changed the plugs last week and while I had them out thought I'd check the compression, well my compression gauge is about 40 years old and has a short stem, the last time I think I used it was in 1971 Confusedhock: , I got exectly 115 lbs on three cylinders :? and 175 on the last one, so I'm thinking the gauge wasn't seated in the plug hole because it was hard to get it into position and was blowing by, after 4000 miles the plugs looked good no fouling and it's not burning oil. so I think I nee to upgrade my tester.

I second that motion. Get a new tester and try it again.

I put some thoughts together about your poor fuel economy and posted them here: http://gl1200goldwings.com/viewtopic.php?t=1095
