Rear tire rubbing on swingarm?

My mechanic advised me that i have a rub mark all around the rite side of rear tire from rubbing on swingarm. He said "your tire is to fat!" Wow...i bought that used tire and wheel off Ebay this winter. It supposed to come off '84 aspy and work on any gl1200. It's dunlop "Elite" metric size MV85-B15. i checked and that size is supposed to work and besides it came off an gl1200...rite! It took me 2 days to get that damn wheel on. My mechanic said on highway it could overheat on rite side and blow and i might not make it to the Euchre Tournament on this Saturday cause i'd be in the hospital. Is a new tire my only option to fix this?

I would check out that spacers on the axle to make sure they are correct. Thats the size that should fit. There is about 3/16 space on the swing srm with that tire.

Personally though I would query why one would buy a used tire for a motorcycle, OK I know there are a lot of people hurting through lack of cash but tires are the most important things next to brakes on the bike. Messing with ones life with used tires to me is not an option, If I cant buy new I dont ride.

An Elite 3 150 90 15 always rubs a very slight black streak just off the side of the tread on my LTD. Not the swing arm but the rubber boot on the shock. It touches just enough to shine the dust off. Other tires dont do this on my bike. Go figure :-\

As for an ebay wheel and tire. Im admit that I do run take offs from other bikes occasionally. But they are tires they came into my friends shop on bikes with no damage and like new tread. The usual reasons are either they are going to a white wall tire or the bike had new tires put on last spring ran 2000 miles all summer and the dude changes tires every year regardless of the miles on them. hock: Several of those guys around here and I know who the are. :d

That being said, Im not sure that even I would run a tire off a used wheel from ebay. If I did it would get a real careful going over at the shop. I definitely wouldnt start off on a long trip on one, and honestly im not a stickler about tires compared to most folks.

My E3 has the same rub mark. This photo is from a couple weeks ago during my two year maintenance. Since I installed the tire, 12,000 miles ago I've checked it carefully. It never got hot nor do anything else but make the mark. I decided it was from a piece of rubber splash guard that goes near the shocks.

Yep exact same rub mark on all three of the E3s ive ran. Never got hot or hurt anything. Strangely the E3 is the only rear ive ran that does that. ON the lift we finally found a tiny little rub mark that matched the rub on the tire which was on the shock boot. Not even enough contact to wear a hole in the boot. Just barely touches.

I wonder if adding an extra washer behind the top of the shock on that side would 'cure' this rubbing?

Not sure Jack. When it didnt hurt anything over the life of three tires and four 2200 mile trips I stopped worrying about it :lol: It didnt even rub enough to rub a hole in the shock boot just make a little shiny spot like the mark on the tire. Like automatic tire blacking only just in one little stripe :lol:
The E3 is the only tire that ever did it. E2 404 maxis shinko etc dont do it. I suppose a washer might stop it but since it never hurt anything I never bothered trying it.
