Thanks for the update.
When I did mine, the brushes were still very large and there was minimal dust. My problem was the old grease has become so thick, the stater motor has a hard time spinning freely when the gl1200 engine was hot. I found a work-around to my slow spinning starter motor when the gl1200 was hot was to open the throttle all the way open BEFORE using the starter button to spin the gl1200 motor to life. This was just a temporary fix until I was able to get into my starter motor. (knock-knock) no problems since. Well, good. I hope your discription is helpfull to those who will be reading this.
